Feelings of Deprivation Can Cause Rebound Eating
Once you start down this eating frenzy you’re likely to fall into the trap of feeling guilty and all diets bets are off!
I know what I’m talking about. It’s happened to me many times. If you’ve ever been on a diet for an extended period of time those feeling of not being able to eat or drink… (FILL IN THE BLANK) can build up and after a while you give in and start eating what ever that BLANK was… and then some.
If you have a lot of weight to lose you need to be realistic about your weight loss journey and set small goals. I love hitting a new “9”. It’s like going from 255 to 249, and then 239. A new nine! And that’s just what I’ve done. When you’ve hit a series of these goals give yourself a reward. If that’s a day off program so be it. But the key is, it’s a day, not a week or six months. Be accountable to yourself.
Here is what I found when I gave myself a food reward that I craved. I wanted pizza. (Why is it we Americans love pizza so much)? So I went to a gourmet pizza parlor here in Folsom on Sutter Street. They make the best. Topping are fresh and generous! My first two bites were heavenly…after that I actually thought to myself… “That was great, I enjoyed it but do I want to keep eating”? I was totally satisfied and done. I stopped eating. No damage done. No guilt. I was still in control. I filled that craving, avoided the feeling of deprivation, and that felt great! I’m not a pizza snob by any means. I enjoyed my reward but I also knew then and now… it’s not a lifestyle I do all the time. It was an at-a-girl reward for my hard work.
Now my rewards tend to be more physical. My next reward is kayaking on Lake Natoma… or indoor skydiving. I still have time to decide. Who want to try indoor skydiving with me?
Rebound eating can be devastating to a long term weight loss program. So mentally keep it fresh and accountable.
